You have every right to complain about a 9:53 it's a sign of where you're at. Don't lower your standards just because sub 10 is a good time for the average Ironman. You're far from average and should have your eyes on sub 9 !
As for what went wrong. Don't try and analyse too much too early. Get recovered. Once your emotions have calmed down look at what you did. Compare to what you did pre race and during the race when you raced well. There are couple of things that stand out to me:
1. You mention carbo loading pre race, though you didn't say it it sounds like thats perhaps something you didn't do before.
2. You mention getting you eating strategy right on the run but not running well.
See you in Lanzarote in a few weeks. We'll have plenty of time to shot the breeze about all things Ironman then !
Enjoy some rest.

Thanks. I know it's hard to really complain about 9:53!

The more I think of it the more I'm convinced that part of the problem was easing back my training too much in the lead up. I think my body just went into full on repair and recovery in the last week. I'll be interested to see how I pull up over the next few days. My experience with a tough race in Switzerland was having the taper wrong led to me being back on form a week after the race!

I'm very focussed on getting a good race in Lanza now!

I think a bit like my race in Germany last year it just wasn't your day, but if you can go sub ten on a bad day then that's a very positive thing... the sign of a great football team is that even when they play badly they grind out a good result... which you most certainly did.

Recover well mate and I look forward to sharing the glory in Lanzarote ;)
