That's a good question and not something I've done despite considering. I've quickly knocked up the chart and you can view it here - http://www.trainstravels.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/bikerun-rothuk-pmc.png

Starts from just after Ironman Lanzarote. First red line is Roth, second is Ironman UK. Only done ATL/CTL at moment.

For Roth I went 9:22 and felt a little tired on the bike. Bike CTL roughly went from 99 to 90 so quite in line with Friel. Run CTL went from 40 to 36 so again around the 10% mark. Then you can see post Roth to get to Ironman UK I really didn't do masses of training - a very heavy taper. I was honestly very fatigued and physically didn't feel up to much more! Wasn't till the final week before IMUK I felt OK.

Bike CTL goes from around 96 down to 64 or so. That's a drop of 32 so around 33%, massive compared to a recommended taper. Run CTL goes from 42 to 27 a drop of 15 so more like 40%. Ability to train was certainly a limiter, but the net effect worked for Ironman UK. Whilst not in as good a form I was certainly more rested.

I suspect that a 3 week gap between two big races does make the 10% rule a little less relevant. I also suspect the amount of training I'd put in in the season leading up to Roth (with 2 other Ironmans too) meant I really needed a break.

Will be interesting to discuss training over in Kona.

Hey Russ, have you ever looked at bike and run CTL/TSB separately? Would be interested to see your numbers for pre-Roth and pre-IMUK.

Steven,

It's what I'm suspecting now. Certainly two days of Paleo has already seen a massive drop in weight and the fluid going down.

Interesting discussion at my local lake with a former competitive body builder. Apparently after a competition they would stay on their competitive diet for a further week for photo shoots. Basically the same phenomena - post event if they went out and binged they piled on a lot of weight/fluid over night.

This time I had a week of it! So no wonder it shot up. So far a return to Paleo sees it heading the right way and to be honest I'm glad to be back to it. I'll be limiting myself to a few treats post Kona I think and mostly trying to remain Paleo.

Russ,
Wonder if the fluid retention might be to do with the combination of a massive race but also going from Paleo to super monster amounts of highly refined carbs. The carbs certainly promote increased fluid retention in my experience. I know it's tough to do (I never manage it) but recovery is really the time for the big salads, protein, fruit etc... ;o)
